THE LOTUS

The Lotus is the result of a collaboration of a very large group (20+ students) that only worked on the project for about one day every week. The aim of the project was to create an object, artefact or pavilion that would complement the central staircase located in the faculty building. It did not necessarily need a function but should mainly be the result of an exploration of material, fabrication and digital design.

The lotus incorporates two types of geometry. The base structure is that of a twisted cylinder, with wooden beams twisting from a large circle at the top to a smaller one at the bottom. This structure was then cladded with components in the shape of hyperbolic paraboloids.

These were fabricated using three types of materials, concrete at the bottom, gypsum for the middle components and large paper ones at the top.
